BUYING LOCALLY MANUFACTURED FOOD WILL CONTRIBUTE TO: MAINTENANCE OF RURAL PRODUCTION, POVERTY REDUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE PRODUCTION OF LOCAL COMPANIES.
From 2000 to date, PKL has bought and processed more than 25 000 tons of corn and soya produced in Côte d'Ivoire by peasants with whom we have partnership agreements. Thus, we contribute to the maintenance of large agricultural zones, to the economic survival of hundreds of families in rural areas and to the positive development of other segments and actors of the food sub-sector.
Direct impact of the local purchases of food products: assessment of the one year collaboration with the WFP - Abidjan .
Between July 2004 and April 2005, PKL won 7 of the 11 restricted invitations to tender launched by the WFP for corn semolina and local white rice. •Quantities delivered in finished products: 4 834 T for 1 767 400 €
•Purchases of raw materials near the peasants: 1 059 366 €
•4 400 T of corn in grain, value: 724 000 €; 24 cities and villages concerned
•1 422 T of paddy, value: 335 366 €; 14 other cities and villages concerned.
•External purchases: transport, packaging, other…: 220 000 €
•Wages (PKL's staff + daily workers): 23 323 €
Impact of these purchases on the rural population
For the contract of 924 T local white rice:
•Surface concerned: 888 ha . Average production by farmer in Côte d'Ivoire = 3 T with 1.6 T/ha of which 48% are marketed
•Between 900 and 1000 households sold their production to PKL
•A number of direct and induced beneficiaries: 8 000 people For the contracts adding up to 3 910 T of corn semolina:
•Surface concerned: 4 400 ha . A peasant in Côte d'Ivoire farms on average 0.5 ha . Average production by farmer = 1.5 T/ha of which 60% are marketed.
•Approximately 8 800 households sold their production to PKL
•A number of direct and induced beneficiaries: 70 400 people
Overall, it is estimated that for 100 euros paid by the WFP, 60 euros go directly to the rural area and 40 euros to the remainder of the national economy of Côte d'Ivoire .
The economic and social impact of a support or a contribution on your part to the continuation of the activities of companies like ours, by privileging the purchases of food products resulting from local agriculture, is thus very significant and deserves all your attention.
